At the Saugeen Stone Festival this summer, witness the creation of an Iron Age Dry Stone Roundhouse, as it is built by the Saugeen Amphitheatre Drystone Crew and their International Walling Guests. In conjunction with the Roundhouse build, a two-day dry stone walling course is being taught during the festival on Sat., Aug. 15 and Sun. Aug. 16. All instructors are certified by the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain.

The course begins with a brief introduction, and then it's hand's on from then. All components of a dry stone wall are covered, from batter frames, base stones, through stones and coping. Students are asked to bring their enthusiasm, safety boots, eye wear protection, gloves, possibly rain gear, sunscreen and brick hammer/mason hammer.

For more information, download this flyer, or contact Dean McLellan, hlmasonry@ehtel.ca.

Other events during the festival include a stone carving course, live music, First Nations vendors and crafts, as well as the 2nd Canadian National Drystone Walling Competition.
